This critical commentary discusses Stephan Lessenich's recent work on democracy. It argues that—to understand the structural boundaries of welfare capitalist democracy —we must critically unearth the limits of liberal democracy. This article first maintains that the absence of an economic democratization dimension is an outcome of liberal democracy's shrinking of the meaning of the political.

I n early , within a few weeks of each other, two antithetical texts were published in London, on the eve of European revolution. The former famously declared that the spectre of communism was haunting Europe, and would soon take possession of it. The latter, using the same imagery with scarcely less confidence, but in the opposite sense, dismissed socialist experiments as little more than chimeras that could never take on real shape as viable substitutes for private property. Liberalism and Socialism have long been conventionally understood as antagonistic intellectual and political traditions; and with good reason, by virtue of both the apparent incompatibility of their theoretical startingpoints—individual and societal, respectively—and of the actual record of conflict, often deadly, between the parties and movements inspired by each. However, at the very outset of this historical contention, it was strangely short-circuited in the trajectory of Mill himself.

In response to the criticism that the International Criminal Court is undemocratic, this article outlines a liberal conception of institutional legitimacy and defends its appropriateness as a moral foundation for the International Criminal Court. In contrast to a communitarian concept of democracy which sees democracy as an expression of the general will , liberals see political legitimacy as stemming from a respect for fundamental human rights. Thus, as long as the International Criminal Court respects the right of the accused to a fair trial, then it is a legitimate institution.

National Democratic Reforms in Africa pp Cite as. The eight month-long trial of the petition deepened the acrimonious political polarization of the country along NPP and NDC lines. The trial was so viciously and maliciously politicized in the media, with almost every decision of the judges given a political spin and tagged with either NDC or NPP biases, that some leading Ghanaians such as Mr. Kofi Annan, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, and the Justices of the Supreme Court trying the case had cause to express their worries about the rising political tension in the country because of the trial. Early Italian liberalism, deeply interlinked with the Risorgimento, had a particularly interventionist streak: elite and state had the duty to prepare the country for liberty. With the rise of socialism and political Catholicism and the Great War, both liberalism and the political system it underpinned were weakened. After the Fascist regime, the Liberal Party played a key role in rebuilding the country, steering its economic reconstruction. But the Party was in a difficult position: while the Christian Democracy occupied the political center, it shifted between the right and center left of the political arena. Post-war liberalism cannot be reduced to the Liberal party: Republicans and Radicals also had liberal influences. Moreover, liberalism as an intellectual force affected society beyond the political sphere. Post , Italian political liberalism is a complicated creature.
