David and Goliath: Chapter 9 pg 263-275

In chapter nine of David and Goliath, Gladwell ties together all of his arguments about power, advantages and disadvantages, and his beliefs on the inverted U curve. They try to prove their power by being mean and attacking their fellow peers which actually shows how weak they are because they have no self-confidence. Bullies love to pick fights and whenever someone backs out, they are perceived as being weak. In reality the ones who back out of the fight are actually the more powerful people because they did not give into the pressure of the bullies. This post brings up an intriguing paradox. I wonder if you can find more examples like the one Gladwell used to make his claim seem even more valid. You observation about bullies certainly holds, but I wonder about larger scale situations.

The author begins by recounting the biblical story of David and Goliath. The Philistines send their champion, Goliath, to fight Israelite soldiers in a one-on-one battle. He runs into the valley with only his staff and stones from which he makes projectiles that he throws at Goliath until they strike him in the forehead and kill him.

Research indicates that small countries can defeat large countries militaristically if the large country is too resource heavy. The weaker opposition does not have as many resources as the stronger side and therefore has to devise unconventional ways to be on the path to victory. Lawrence of Arabia and his ragtag Bedouin defeated 1, well-armed and well-trained Turkish soldiers because of an unexpected strategy. The father knew little about basketball and the girls on his team were untalented and inexperienced. In order to even the playing field, the coach had to think outside the box.

This tale is usually recounted as an instance of the way people who are considered as the weaker party can be successful, no matter how engulfing the chances can be. However, can we really say David was the weaker party in his fight against Goliath in the Valley of Elah? As you can notice, the sling is in fact a very powerful weapon, since it can throw rocks at foes at destructive rapidity, without any need to approach the opponent so that he can wield his sword. Moreover, David was adept at his sling since it was necessary for him to protect his herd against predators. Thus, actually, there was nothing Goliath could do. This summary will teach you that our understanding of the weaker party can be fallacious sometimes, and we might not assess correctly who has the upper hand in many circumstances.

In David and Goliath , Malcolm Gladwell argues that what we often think of as disadvantages may actually be advantages, and that advantages of goliaths may turn into disadvantages. Gladwell shows us that underdog victories are less miraculous and more achievable than they seem, and sheds light on how we can reinterpret our own weaknesses to locate new sources of power. In the Biblical story of David and Goliath, a small shepherd boy conquers a giant by slinging a rock at his exposed forehead. But what if underdog victories have less to do with luck and more to do with the very circumstances we view as disadvantages? In David and Goliath , Malcolm Gladwell argues that what we assume are disadvantages might actually be advantages, and vice versa.
