This chapter traces the trajectory of two major dissenting movements in Latin America and the Caribbean in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. The second half of the article examines the rise of Pentecostalism in Latin America, with particular attention to dynamic and dissenting characteristics, most notably its plastic theology, organic approach to church planting and leadership, and its obverse relationships with Catholic Liberation Theology. Protestantism is not a religion indigenous to Latin America.
Indeed, nearly one-in-five Latin Americans now describe themselves as Protestant, and across the countries surveyed majorities of them self-identify as Pentecostal or belong to a Pentecostal denomination. With nearly million followers worldwide, including many in Africa and Latin America, Pentecostalism is now a global phenomenon. But present day Pentecostalism traces its origins to a religious revival movement that began in the early 20 th century. We asked Andrew Chesnut , professor of religious studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, to discuss how and why Pentecostalism has grown so dramatically in Latin America in recent years. The interview has been edited for clarity and condensed.

About Follow Donate. Demographic Study. The wide collection of cross-national Pew Research Center surveys analyzed in this report on age gaps in religious commitment can also be used to look at the ways religious observance varies among all adults — defined as people ages 18 and older — in different parts of the world. The four standard measures of religious commitment affiliation, importance of religion, worship attendance and frequency of prayer used in this report may not be equally suitable for all religious groups. In particular, rates of prayer and attendance at worship services generally are seen as reliable indicators of observance within Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — but they may not be as applicable for Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern religions. In fact, religious identity itself is often conceived of differently in East Asia, where observance is more a matter of culture and tradition as opposed to membership in a particular group. For a discussion of theories that attempt to explain these regional variations, see Chapter 1.

Klaus Koschorke has long pioneered an approach to the study of church history which gives due place to the rise and importance of Christianity in the southern hemisphere, an approach that counterbalances church histories written by Europeans and North Americans and dominated by the concerns of the "North. Brief introductions, including descriptions of the author s and the contexts of the documents, are provided by the editors, and each piece is precisely located and accompanied by a reference to mostly published sources in various languages. A generous list of important ancillary books is also included under a "further reading" category for each document. The texts are all short: few extend beyond a page—though some are arranged under a common theme that extends for several pages.
